Background

Alpine Bird Song was formed in late 2016. We are a small group of Fernhill and Sunshine Bay residents who are passionate about looking after our native birdlife. In our area we have tuis, bellbirds, pigeons, silvereyes and fantails, and our vision is retaining and enhancing this native birdlife. In addition, we hope that our trapping will help protect rata and other vulnerable native plants in our local Lakeside reserves.

Coverage

Alpine Bird Song volunteers maintains predator control traps across Fernhill/Sunshine Bay, including public walking tracks Arawata Trakc and Sunshine Bay Track.

2 Goodnature A24 traps – checked weekly

16 DOC200 traps – checked weekly

6 Timms traps (all on private property) – checked daily

Usage of area

Tracks for walking (dogs allowed) and mountain-biking. Close proximity to Fernhill / Sunshine Bay means this area sees a lot of joggers out for a ~30min run without having to drive anywhere. Rock climbers enjoy half a dozen crags, totaling over 50 routes.

Group objectives

To extend our trap lines fully around the perimeter of our residential area. To get more of the local population involved in our activities, and encourage more residents to install traps on their own properties. Longer term we would like to extend the trap lines at either ends towards Queenstown and along the Glenorchy road.
